Richard Hobson’s charge enjoyed a fine season as a novice last term, closing with form figures of 2211122 after a fine second to Ravenhill in the National Hunt Chase at Cheltenham.
Things didn’t go to plan for much of the current campaign but Lord Du Mesnil was back on song when winning a trial for this contest at Haydock in February, making all and battling on bravely to fend off the challenge of Achille.
Hobson gave the eight-year-old a spin in the Grand Sefton here in December to get acquainted with the fences and is now ready for the real test.
“Aintree has always been the plan – that’s why he had a prep run in the Sefton, over a shorter trip,” said Hobson. “He’s a staying chaser and this is the biggest staying chase of the year. That’s what he’s turned into, he’s proven that.”
